We know that writing your CV can be very daunting.  Where do you even begin?  We have all been there...and so we have decided to give you the inside scoop so there is no way your CV will go to the bottom of the pile! Here is our Golden Guide! Personal Profile: This is the first thing your future employer will read about you and is the part that makes them want to continue reading! Just write a few lines about yourself but don’t write an essay.  Stick to short and sweet!  If you are finding this tricky, ask your friends or family for three good words that would describe you in order to point you in the right direction. Education: Your education years should be listed in reverse chronological order and should be followed by the qualifications and grades you have achieved. Career History: This is where you highlight the tasks and responsibilities that you have carried out in your last role. Make sure you highlight areas that are relevant to the job you are applying for.. If you have not had much experience, don’t fret, just think about other things you have been involved with such as volunteering, school activities, work experience and internships.  If there was something you particularly enjoyed and/or that you were very good at, do mention this as it will add depth to your experience..

We are very excited to announce our new initiative at Joyce Guiness - #JGStories.  The idea for this came from the fact that recruitment is still, advances in technology notwithstanding, a people business and really knowing what makes people tick is key to what we do.  With that, over the next few months, we are going to lift the lid on the JG team’s lives (given they spend their time delving into their candidates’ lives as they look to match them to the perfect role!).   Alongside that, we are also going to focus on some of our lovely clients (so we can find out more about what they get up to when they are not in the office…), as well as some of the talented candidates we have placed to find out how they are doing and if they have any advice for anyone looking for a role in their industry. The fourth Invictus Games are upon us and next week our MD, Pip Cox, is swapping the office for the stands as she goes with her family to support her brother Spencer Bull who will be competing in the GB team at the games in Sydney. Spencer will be competing in the swimming, sailing and shot put. The Invictus Games were started by Prince Harry four years ago and is for wounded, injured or ill servicemen and women who have served their countries in conflicts and have been affected physically or non-physically whilst doing so. The games are used as a way to encourage these people to incorporate sports into their rehabilitation programmes. They celebrate the strength of these people and all that they have done for their nations as well as raises awareness of the injuries caused by war. Invictus is Latin for the word ‘unconquered’ and the games show the fighting spirits displayed by those taking part. J J Chalmers, who is presenting the games on the BBC this year and is an Invictus Games gold medallist has said, “The games have changed my life so I live for the opportunity to help showcase them, especially as they continue to grow, educate, inspire and entertain”. In the UK alone, 1,100 people showed an interest in the games and 400 contestants competed to make the 72 person strong team..

Halloween is fast approaching and with this comes longer nights and colder days, so why not make the most of this change in season and this upcoming spooky evening to do something different. London is a city full of surprises and hidden treasures, so explore them! This year there is a whole host of things that you can do to get your heart pumping and your blood boiling; from doing night tours of cemeteries to a themed boat trip on the Thames. With an array of chilling attractions and haunted venues, make your Halloween extra gory by looking at our selection of things to do! Back in 2007 I moved to Asia to live and work and I ended up spending almost two years in Malaysia giving me the chance to explore and absorb the sites, culture and of course, the food of Asia. I spent every weekend discovering a new island or food hotspot; I was spoilt for choice, that’s for sure!  I returned to the UK in the Autumn of 2009 as the credit crunch was rearing its ugly head and began the chore of calling and registering with recruitment agencies here in London. The streets are being covered in falling leaves, the days are getting darker earlier, the nights are drawing in and the weather’s getting colder. This can only mean one thing – winter is coming!  As some of you may be experiencing your first winter in London, we have decided to write about the best things to do on the forthcoming cold and dark evenings and let you know that there is more to do than rush home and get cosy in front of the TV. No matter what part of the city you live in, there is always something wintery to do. Mulled wines and ciders are starting to appear in your local pubs and Christmas lights are being hung across the streets and around trees. People are keenly anticipating the appearance of the first brightly decorated trees and Christmas songs on the radio. Winter isn’t all about Christmas however, but the city embraces this and there is a huge amount of activities and fun things for everyone to do, and it doesn’t all cost money! Our team (Team JG) did something different this week; we went to Shaftsbury Avenue to try out the new Crystal Maze. If you were ever a fan of the show you will know how the game works.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with the 90’s show, you are led through a ‘maze’ or different themed rooms with various challenges in each. Led by an enthusiastic host, you are left to work as a team and must help each other pass each challenge. This was not just your everyday work outing, this was a team building exercise! This was a time for us to combine our expertise and skills to work together and encourage each other to win the game and therefore collect as many crystals as possible. In our day jobs at Joyce Guiness we very much rely on each other as we all have our individual duties to complete, which when put together, complete the main task.  It is important therefore that we are able to work together as a team and coordinate ideas and skills. When doing team building activities these can highlight various characteristics and skills of individuals that you might not have known about before. Not only this, it can also help to build trust between you all. Having trust within a team is crucial as it means that people are comfortable to share ideas..

If you follow our blogs and social media, you will know that we have followed Kiko Matthews over the past year or two and you will know what amazing challenges she has overcome. Among other things, in March 2018, Kiko became the fastest woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean as a solo rower. She did this 3284 mile row in 49 days, 7 hours and 15 minutes, which is a whole week faster than the previous record holder. Kiko is now taking on a different challenge; cycling the coast of the UK and Northern Ireland with the intention of raising awareness of the problem of single use plastic. In recent years, the dramatic effects that plastics are having on the environment and the world’s oceans has been much more publicised and more steps are being taken towards the prevention of the amount of plastic. The amount of plastic straws being used has been cut down drastically, people are carrying reusable coffee cups, metal and glass bottles are becoming more and more popular and cotton buds have been changed from plastic to paper stems. Shops are slowly taking steps towards reducing their plastic consumption as well, with new plastic free aisles being introduced by various companies. This change won’t happen overnight however and so the work that people like Kiko are doing is helping to educate the public and support everyone..
