Winter in London
The streets are being covered in falling leaves, the days are getting darker earlier, the nights are drawing in and the weather’s getting colder. This can only mean one thing – winter is coming! As some of you may be experiencing your first winter in London, we have decided to write about the best things to do on the forthcoming cold and dark evenings and let you know that there is more to do than rush home and get cosy in front of the TV. No matter what part of the city you live in, there is always something wintery to do.
Mulled wines and ciders are starting to appear in your local pubs and Christmas lights are being hung across the streets and around trees. People are keenly anticipating the appearance of the first brightly decorated trees and Christmas songs on the radio. Winter isn’t all about Christmas however, but the city embraces this and there is a huge amount of activities and fun things for everyone to do, and it doesn’t all cost money! If you’re looking for something free to do, there are parks to explore and Christmas markets to walk around. You could also spend an evening wandering the streets looking at all of the Christmas light which have spread throughout the city, ending at the Christmas tree in Trafalgar square. If you’re prepared to spend some money, the list of things that you can do is even longer!
Winter Wonderland, Hyde Park
It’s that time of year again where peoples Instagram’s are starting to fill up of pictures and videos of ice skating, sipping on mulled wine and browsing the markets which have popped up everywhere. What if you could do all of that in one place? Winter Wonderland is free to enter and once you’re there you can choose to pay for as much or as little as you like. You can ice skate, shop, eat, drink and go on fair rides. It’s a day out that suits everyone; no matter what age or budget. If you fancy ice skating however, book in advance, or visit one of the many other places you can ice skate in London in winter.
Christmas at Kew Gardens
Kew Gardens transforms for the winter months and has the most incredible lights display made up of over a million lights and spreading over a mile. It’s an incredible spectacle and is possible to walk around with a glass of mulled wine keeping your hands warm. Whilst you’re there, there are also food stand and some market stalls where you can buy presents for people.
Rooftop Activities
Why not take advantage of the darker nights and the extra lights to spend some evenings on rooftops across London. With ice skating and curling rinks, bars and pop-up restaurants, it’s a great way to spend an evening with friends trying different things. Not only are there new things to do, there are the incredible views across the skyline.
New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest nights of the year for celebrations, with thousands of people flooding the streets and overflowing venues. The above events are all open for New Year’s Eve so if you’re not looking for a party, they are great things to do. However, if you are looking for a party, the events list is endless. From dancing the night away under the largest creature to have ever lived at the Natural History Museum to boogying on a boat, there is something for everyone! If you fancy a quieter night, you can venture to the river to see in the New Year with the fireworks at midnight.
