London's New Housing Solution?

, a new scheme, funded privately by Singaporean investors is “a new way to live in London”, is the corporate answer to the issues facing new workers or students in the capital hunting for a flat and someone to share the costs. It claims to give tenants –“a hassle-free, collective life similar to a student hall of residence, but for people starting out on their career”. Sounds great right? Some agree but most say it’s a faze that can’t last, and won’t last. Most of the rooms are 10 sq metres  in size only and relatively dear compared to the traditional flat-shares seen in London’s inner suburbs, but here you won’t find cockroaches, mice or untidy bedroom as the new set ups even come with cleaners, who are included in the cost of living there, either once a week or once every two weeks. Those that enquire and are keen to move there typically pay just over £1,000 a month for what the scheme has called a “Twodio”. For that they get a bed described as “double” – smaller than your average double bed, plus a private bathroom and access to a kitchen unit that is shared with one other tenant (let’s hope you get along!)  Bedclothes are supplied free of charge (to fit the smaller beds) as is the gas, wifi and other bills too. The new in –..

Summer Sporting Events 2017

With the weather outside today you would not know that Summer is just around the corner. Not only does the Summer bring glorious weather (?!), BBQ’s and a whole lot of fun, it also is a time when sporting events come into their own. This blog is all about various British sporting events which are taking place over the Summer 2017. BADMINTON HORSE TRIALS Bringing in the summer is Badminton Horse Trials which is a four day, all-rounder event. It is great fun. The Thursday and Friday showcase the world’s best dressage horses, with some beautiful routines. Saturday is the most popular day, it is the Cross Country course. Not only is it fun to watch with the jumps getting harder each year, but you can also walk the beautiful course. Sunday is more of a relaxed day in comparison to the hectic Cross Country Saturday. You can sit and watch horses jumping to amazing heights, of course excitement is added as it is the culmination of the competition, and you can see the prize winner being given the amazing prize. Badminton is not just for the horse lovers. The shops which exhibit there are fantastic: gourmet food stands, specialist leather shops, clothes stalls even pet shops. I highly recommend it, a great day out watching riding and some retail therapy- what more could you want?! ROYAL ASCOT Staying on..

London Pop Ups

There has been excitement in the Joyce Guiness office over the last week, due to London’s beach opening! We believe that London is the best city in the world and a beach is the only thing that could make it better. ‘Neverland’ is the pop up of the summer. It is an outdoor stretch of Thames beach on the North side of the river, south of Fulham and next to Wandsworth Bridge. It will have amazing street food and in true British style will have Beach Huts. Although Neverland is alcohol free, there is the opportunity to BYOB, they even provide mocktails for you then to create cocktails! Tickets to get into this event costs £5 with no corkage fee. The pop up starts on Wednesday 10th May and is open on weekday evenings and all day on weekends….If you need us that is where we will be… If you are not as keen on beaches as us, there are some other fab Pop Ups arriving this summer. Another great love of the Joyce Guiness office is cheese… So when we found out about the Cheese Bar opening in Camden Market we could not contain ourselves. There will be urban cheesemakers, Swiss fried cheese balls, special cheesy dishes as well as craft beers, live jazz and blues. Sign us up ASAP! Box Park in Shoreditch is under refurbishment and opens..

First Day at Work-…

We have got back to the grindstone and finally resigned ourselves to the fact that winter might actually be coming and Summer 2017 is not going to last forever…  Instead of being sad about the fact that soon our Pimms is going to be replaced by mulled wine, we are focussing our attention on finding our amazing candidates their next dream jobs.   At this time of year, we are really busy with new roles coming in with the influx of graduates and general candidates who are ready to move on and find a new challenge. Therefore, we thought it would be the perfect time to give some tips on what to do when you get that dream job.   The Office   It may come as a given, but make sure that you have done the journey to your new office before. You will not want to give a bad impression and be late on your first day, so you will need to take into account the traffic and the extra time it will take you. Bear in mind that the chances will be that you are doing it in rush hour. The Eco Warriors out there, who choose to cycle, make sure there is a place to park your bike and a place for you to get changed, as it could create a very awkward situation having to..

Joyce Guiness do Brunch

JOYCE GUINESS DO BRUNCH Here in the office, there is nothing we love more than a good weekend brunch. Judging by the queues outside our favourite restaurants at “brunch time”, the rest of London agree with us. We thought that it was high time Joyce Guiness shared with you our opinion of where the best places to go are. It has been tough, but we have managed to narrow it down to six (we couldn’t quite do five) must visit eateries. Mommi, Clapham High St Our first recommendation to you is Mommi on Clapham High St. This restaurant is a mix between South American and Japanese food. This might sound like an odd partnership, but it works- and is mighty delicious. The menu includes dishes such as: Huevos Rancheros, Brunch Sashimi Salad and for those with a sweet tooth- Cinnamon Waffle Churros. I can vouch and say they are all utterly brilliant! If you are feeling extra naughty you can pay an extra £30 and have bottomless bubbles to add to the fun! Dirty Bones, Shoreditch What a treat Dirty Bones is. I first stumbled across it by accident, it was pouring with rain and I ran into the closest place for shelter. The best shelter I could have found! Dirty Bones is an American style restaurant. Not only do they have a fantastic cocktail menu, but their brunch menu..

THE PERFECT CV

We know that writing your CV can be very daunting.  Where do you even begin?  We have all been there...and so we have decided to give you the inside scoop so there is no way your CV will go to the bottom of the pile! Here is our Golden Guide! Personal Profile: This is the first thing your future employer will read about you and is the part that makes them want to continue reading! Just write a few lines about yourself but don’t write an essay.  Stick to short and sweet!  If you are finding this tricky, ask your friends or family for three good words that would describe you in order to point you in the right direction. Education: Your education years should be listed in reverse chronological order and should be followed by the qualifications and grades you have achieved. Career History: This is where you highlight the tasks and responsibilities that you have carried out in your last role. Make sure you highlight areas that are relevant to the job you are applying for.. If you have not had much experience, don’t fret, just think about other things you have been involved with such as volunteering, school activities, work experience and internships.  If there was something you particularly enjoyed and/or that you were very good at, do mention this as it will add depth to your experience..

Introducing #JGStories

We are very excited to announce our new initiative at Joyce Guiness - #JGStories.  The idea for this came from the fact that recruitment is still, advances in technology notwithstanding, a people business and really knowing what makes people tick is key to what we do.  With that, over the next few months, we are going to lift the lid on the JG team’s lives (given they spend their time delving into their candidates’ lives as they look to match them to the perfect role!).   Alongside that, we are also going to focus on some of our lovely clients (so we can find out more about what they get up to when they are not in the office…), as well as some of the talented candidates we have placed to find out how they are doing and if they have any advice for anyone looking for a role in their industry. So, to start the ball rolling, we decided to sit our MD, Pip Cox, down and discover a few things about her – as well as covering what it is like running a business and being a mum.  We hope you will enjoy #JGStories and please do feel free to send us your comments or questions.  Alongside that, if you are a candidate or client and you are happy to be featured – please do let us know! What did..
