Work Experience- First Hand!

Why do Work Experience? What is the relevance of work experience and how can it help you? Right now I am doing a stint of work experience at Joyce Guiness, where I am being made aware of the skills required in a recruitment agency. While this may not show any relevance to future plans and ideas, it will help provide me a very basic foundation and set of skills for whatever career I end up with. Below, I will outline a few reasons why work experience is so important, and the benefits of doing it. Getting a taste for potential careers and jobs is really beneficial. It can help push you in new and exciting directions as you could decide that the jobs you’ve had your heart set on for ever, really isn’t for you after some experience. As well as this, you may find a new ambition and drive for a different career path which is really exciting. Work experience is a great way to quickly show employers your interests and skills on your CV when searching for jobs. This is vital as the competition for jobs are high and can seem overwhelming, but, by securing experience in a range of careers can really make you stand out from other candidates. Having this on your CV will increase your chances of getting offers at the places you want as..

Consultant Interview: Kate

In May, Kate joined our team as a Senior Consultant. She has been fab and it feels as though she has been here forever! Previously, she had been a PA in the Royal Household and at an Exec search company. We thought we would ask a few questions about her transition from being a PA to a Recruitment Consultant: What did you enjoy about being a PA? I loved the variety of the role and developing a close relationship with both the team and the Principals I worked for. It was fantastic working for the Royal Household and meeting some remarkable people. Why did you make the change into recruitment? I wanted a new challenge and I thought that having spent the last 8 years as a PA, I could relate to candidates and also understand clients’ needs. What is it like working in recruitment? I love it!! There is nothing better than telling a candidate that they have got a job! It is so satisfying matching the right candidates to clients, ensuring both parties are happy. Why did you choose Joyce Guiness? The team! I came to register with JG when I was looking for a new role and I was so impressed by Jessie, my then Consultant, but the whole team were always so professional and friendly. I registered with two other agencies at the time but JG..

Thoughts on approaching a…

WLTM - Career.  Must be rewarding, stimulating, challenging, flexible... Some thoughts on how to approach a career plan.   I was very fortunate to join Pip Cox, Managing Director of Joyce Guiness at a tremendously inspiring event hosted by Addie Pinkster and Alex Corley-Smith of Adelpha. The guest speaker was Jan Babiak a frankly awe-inspiring individual and very successful businesswoman. Jan’s words and her story gave us so many thoughts and ideas it is hard to whittle these down to one area however, Jan’s comments around the benefits of a life plan resonated very strongly with Pip and I. We are both fortunate in that we meet a wide variety of candidates across different sectors and at various stages of their careers.  Experience has shown us that individuals can struggle as they leave university or full-time education as they are faced with a smorgasbord of potential career options.  It can be difficult for them to isolate a career path, as well as identifying the right job and company for them. With that, we wanted to take some time to look at how individuals might put together a career plan that will hopefully provide clarity and framework, not only at the start of their working lives, but also potentially as they progress and explore other industries and roles.  Each person is, of course, different and so how you approach your plan..

New Year, New Job…

It is a New Year, and now is a popular time for people to be looking for jobs and for clients to be recruiting for their jobs to be filled. We thought that it would be a good time to revisit a blog which was written to give advice on securing the first role in London. Although it is aimed at ‘first jobbers’, this blog is also useful if you are dusting off your job finding hat and need some little hints and tips at getting back on the game.   Registering with Agencies London has so many opportunities but unfortunately the job hunt for most is not always straightforward… It can be so disheartening when you send out hundreds of applications to different companies and hear nothing back.  So how do you go about it? Firstly, it would be an idea to apply to some London based agencies. As a first time jobber it is difficult knowing exactly what you want to do and how to go about getting it, and agencies can help with this. Recruitment agencies are there to help when you’re not sure which direction you want to go in – they make the job hunt appear less daunting, and help by doing the hard work for you, so it’s a good idea to register with as many agencies as possible. The registering part is pretty..

WHY USE TEMPS?

I started my career working in television running the events at their Head Office. The number of events we used to do used to overwhelm me sometimes. Knowing how much work was involved was incredible and when you are running 3 - 5 events a day, outsourcing some of the work was my only option. Bringing in agency staff was a brilliant way of managing the workload and to ensure efficiency. This used to range from staff helping set up the event, to staff working there, managing the guest list along with meeting and greeting clients. When I became a Personal Assistant, there would be times when you would need to bring in a temp, sometimes at really short notice and this is where having a temp agency is great. You can get a temp within a short amount of time. Whether it’s to cover projects, sickness, holiday’s, peak periods etc. Temporary work is just one of the ways that businesses can offer flexibility and at the same time better meet their own needs. Bringing a temp on board can also be a good way to getting work done whilst you continue your search for the “perfect” candidate. If you are recruiting for a permanent position and need support in the interim,  a temp candidate is perfect, sometimes they end up being your “perfect” candidate. Temp-Perm is always a great..

Using Recruitment Agencies

Rewind to a year ago and I knew nothing about recruitment agencies and neither did my friends. We were all talking about moving to London and looking for jobs and we thought the way we would do this would be by looking online and networking. We didn’t realise that there were people who would help us find our dream jobs. A couple of months into our year of studying on a secretarial course, some recruitment agencies came in and started talking to us about our options following our graduation. Two of these talks in and I was still none the wiser. Why would people help find us jobs and if they would, how much would it cost us? At the end of one of these talks, someone plucked up the courage to ask how much the service of using recruitment agencies cost, and they told us “nothing”. That couldn’t be right could it? Fast forward a year and I have been working at a recruitment agency for a few months now, and I couldn’t recommend signing up with an agency any more. Thinking back to my naivety and now seeing how the job market works, I wonder how anyone can get a job without the help of an agency. Using an agency to help you find a job couldn’t be any easier. All the hard work is left to your..

The Advantages of Temping

Are you on University holidays or have you just graduated and are looking to gain some office experience and make some summer pocket money? Temp work has various advantages and it is something that we recommend doing, not only to help build up your CV but also to get a feel for different types of offices and industries and perhaps help you decide what sort of environment you would like to work in eventually. Some people may think that temping offers you the odd day here and there; there are also opportunities to spend weeks to months within the same temp job. Whatever period of time it is that you are looking to fill, you will likely be able to find a temp job to match. Below are some of the top advantages of temping. Try before you buy If you are unsure of the sort of industry, office or role that you would like to go into or perhaps haven’t spent any time in an office before, then temping offers you the opportunity to experience different environments and varying roles (depending on prior experience), allowing you to gain experience and ‘try before you buy’. This is a great thing as it means that when you come to look for a full time job, if that is what you would like to do, then you may have a more defined..
