New Year, New Job Hunt!

It is a New Year, and now is a popular time for people to be looking for jobs and for clients to be recruiting for their jobs to be filled. We thought that it would be a good time to revisit a blog which was written to give advice on securing the first role in London. Although it is aimed at ‘first jobbers’, this blog is also useful if you are dusting off your job finding hat and need some little hints and tips at getting back on the game.

Registering with Agencies

London has so many opportunities but unfortunately the job hunt for most is not always straightforward…

It can be so disheartening when you send out hundreds of applications to different companies and hear nothing back.  So how do you go about it? Firstly, it would be an idea to apply to some London based agencies. As a first time jobber it is difficult knowing exactly what you want to do and how to go about getting it, and agencies can help with this.

Recruitment agencies are there to help when you’re not sure which direction you want to go in – they make the job hunt appear less daunting, and help by doing the hard work for you, so it’s a good idea to register with as many agencies as possible.

The registering part is pretty easy – they go through your CV and ask questions. You get to talk all about yourself, your interests, your ambitions, what jobs you’re interested and those that you’re not.

With your first job, it’s important that you take your time and don’t rush into taking something that you don’t like and can’t see yourself doing. Recruitment agencies will send you the specs of all the jobs that they think you’d be suited for, but it doesn’t mean you have to take them just because! Jobs come flying through recruitment agencies’ doors all the time, so if they don’t have something suitable that day, the chances are something else will pop up the next day! You don’t want to waste the agencies’ time or your own.

Social Media

As well as registering with agencies it is important to keep up to date with all things social media. Social media is becoming an increasingly powerful tool, for example here at Joyce Guiness as well as using our website, we advertise all our jobs on Linked In, Facebook and Twitter. It is an easy and simple way to connect with prospective candidates. It’s not just agencies that use social media, but companies themselves post their jobs via these means. It is important to keep an eye on these platforms – you could simply carry out a search, or follow companies / agencies directly.

Job Boards

Additionally, sign up to online job boards such as ‘Reed’ and ‘Indeed’, where a whole array of different jobs are posted and updated daily. At Joyce Guiness, we advertise our jobs through 2 platforms – our website and ‘Secs and the City’. These job boards really do make it easy for you, as they also have the facilities for you to sign-up to job alerts. You can be made aware instantly when your perfect job becomes live, meaning you’ll never miss out again!

Work Experience

If neither routes sound like your sort of thing, then you could always try completing some work experience. It’s a great chance to get as much exposure to an industry that you may not know a huge amount about, and gain some transferable skills – and you never know, if your prove yourself, there could even be a job for you at the end!

We hope that these little bits of advice will help you! Good Luck and make sure that you get in touch with us!

    Top Tips for getting…

LinkedIn plays a huge part when it comes to searching for a new job. Once your CV has been submitted to a potential employer be it via a direct application or a recruitment agency, one of the first things the employer will do is to search for you on LinkedIn and Social Media.  LinkedIn allows you to search for jobs, post your digital CV, connect with individuals and allows you to be searched for by future employers, recruitment consultants and so on. The search aspect helps to narrow the parameters making the search more relevant to potential employers.  You want to stand out from the competition and be the one who gets noticed, so how do you go about this and how should you best construct your profile? First and foremost, your profile must be clear and as many of the other relevant sections of your profile must be filled in as this makes it easier for the relevant industry experts and potential hirers to find you. Make sure you include a background image and a professional photo of yourself. Write a summary, this could be similar to your personal profile and should include any relevant skills and experience, as then it is easier for you to be found in a search if you do so.  Include your past jobs and experience and the years you were at each company..

    Pay rise

It can be daunting when the time for salary reviews come up. It is best to prep yourself ahead of time and be honest about how you feel in the role - if you have exceeded expectations, met goals and been consistent with good time keeping, being a good team player etc. If so then go in with this in mind and remain calm and confident. Have a list (in your head) as to why you feel you deserve the pay rise. It may be that your employer needs some reminding! This way you have all of the information at hand and if it is applicable then also raise any targets and new business that you may have brought in. Employers after all are looking after the bottom line. Should you not receive a pay rise do not be disheartened, it is worth being brave and asking your manager why, it is constructive for you to know, so that you can move forward in an informed way. It may be worth suggesting that if there are any courses you could take to add to your skill set, it could help out for any further salary reviews in the future. If you are happy where you are - wait it out and try again, enjoying your job is so important!

    IR35

In short (and it's hard to keep this short) we have outlined what it is that you need to look out for and if IR35 applies. With 6th April fast approaching, businesses in the private sector who hire personal service companies, will need to determine if IR35 is relevant to their contractors. Finding jobs through social…

Over 90% of companies use social media when hiring especially via a recruitment agency platform; It’s an efficient quick and environmentally friendly marketing method for finding candidates. Sites like LinkedIn are top of the list for social media job search(es) with over 400 million followers - this has ramped up the need to be social media savvy and participate as a business to keep up with the everchanging hiring, recruiting and employment trends. A large percentage of companies will use platform(s) such as Facebook to screen candidates so it is imperative that your online presence and profile have to be clear of any posts, photos or comments that would jeopardise your chances of getting your foot in the door with recruiters and companies in general. Instagram feeds, stories and blogs are also a quickfire way to get the job details out there to candidates; posting pictures and information that is pleasing to the candidate’s’ feed and links that take them straight to the employment agency - it takes the work out of pounding the pavements and saves time and energy for - both recruiters, candidates and clients. It’s also a good way of connecting on a human level (believe it or not!) to the recruiter’s - office, team by sharing more than just the new job that comes in - photos of the team on days out, sharing ideas of..

    JG Jolly 2019

Every year as a team, we like to do something a little different and take the opportunity to spend some time together outside of the office. This year was no exception and we have returned to the office after a fantastic day and a half outside of London. On Tuesday we brought our overnight bags packed with thermals and hot water bottles into the office and left work after lunch to head to Hampshire where we would be glamping for the night. We arrived at our destination, Manor Farm, which is part of the Featherdown Collection, and were greeted by clear blue skies and beautiful views over the fields and hills. Manor farm offers a collection of accommodation options and we had opted for the tents which have a hot tub and separate showers. Being glamping, there was no electricity and so the most important thing was to get the stoves lit to heat the tents, and our food(!), along with lighting the hot tubs for some evening entertainment. We had a fantastic evening sitting outside by the fire, enjoying being out of London together. After a good night’s sleep in the beds in our tents, we had breakfast and packed up, ready to go to our next stop – Newlyns Farm Shop and cookery school. Despite the amazing farm shop, and surrounding boutiques, we weren’t there to shop, but..

    Bringing Your Dream Role…

What if I told you that you could dream your ideal role into reality? Or more specifically, create it? This might sound like madness but stay with me and let me tell you how you can do just that.   Before I continue, allow me to introduce myself. I am Faye, a Purpose & Life Coach otherwise known as The ‘What If’ Coach. I specialise in supporting individuals to go from feeling lost and frustrated to feeling focused and inspired. I am a trained Coach, I’ve studied BSc (Hons) Psychology and I am fascinated with learning about the power of the mind. Why? Because our minds create our entire reality and when you learn to shift your mindset, you can literally change your entire world. I appreciate this concept may feel a little out there right now but stay with me.   If I had to take a guess, you are likely searching for jobs by scrolling through job adverts and applying for ones you think you are capable of doing. Am I right? This is certainly one way, but I’m here to suggest that there is a much more powerful way to create the role you want. You see, whatever you feed your mind and your subconscious, it will begin to look for in the world. Your subconscious does not know the difference between what is real and what..

    The Advantages of Temping

Are you on University holidays or have you just graduated and are looking to gain some office experience and make some summer pocket money? Temp work has various advantages and it is something that we recommend doing, not only to help build up your CV but also to get a feel for different types of offices and industries and perhaps help you decide what sort of environment you would like to work in eventually. Some people may think that temping offers you the odd day here and there; there are also opportunities to spend weeks to months within the same temp job. Whatever period of time it is that you are looking to fill, you will likely be able to find a temp job to match. Below are some of the top advantages of temping. Try before you buy If you are unsure of the sort of industry, office or role that you would like to go into or perhaps haven’t spent any time in an office before, then temping offers you the opportunity to experience different environments and varying roles (depending on prior experience), allowing you to gain experience and ‘try before you buy’. This is a great thing as it means that when you come to look for a full time job, if that is what you would like to do, then you may have a more defined..

    An Alternative to University…

Last week we had Tess, a student at Oxford Media & Business School working with us and gaining experience of being in an office. She spent her week doing lots of social media, writing job adverts and learning how to manoeuvre around the website and how to add jobs and content to it. We thought she was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed having her in the office with us. For those of you finishing school and not sure whether to go to university, straight into the workplace or looking for something different to do, have a read of the blog that Tess has written for us about her time at Oxford Media & Business School. Thank you Tess! I originally had a place at Oxford Brookes to study Anthropology, however during my gap year, I realised that I was picking the course for the sake of going to University. After doing some work, it was evident that I wanted to get into the working world as soon as possible, rather than studying for three more years. After some research into alternatives to University, I came across the Professional Business Diploma course at Oxford Media & Business School. This course was exactly what I was looking for and so I made the conscious decision to withdraw my University offer. The course has given me the opportunity to spend a year in..

    Summer In London

For those of you that have spent a summer in London, you know it can be a very busy, expensive time of year.  When you finish work and the sun is out there is nothing better than to go outside and have a nice cold drink! There is a whole host of things to do in London in the summer other than just going to the pub though. Whether it is just exploring some parks you haven’t been to yet or trying out some new hotspots, we have collated some of the top things to do in London this summer season. Outdoor Swimming If we are in for another scorcher like we had last year, there is nothing quite as refreshing as a dip in some fresh, cold water. Lots of you do brave a swim during the cooler months, but it certainly isn’t as welcoming as when you are doing it to escape the daytime heat or to refresh after a long day. Whether you are looking for an outdoor pool, heated or not, then head over to the Lido’s spotted around the city or, if you are brave enough, you can head straight to the serpentine for some fresh water swimming! Best Parks If you don’t fancy cramming around a swimming pool, what’s better than lying in a park with some drinks and snacks, or even better,..

    #JGStories – Jessie Mack

This week for our fifth #JGStories, we spoke to one of our Partners, Jessie. Jessie has worked at Joyce Guiness for 8 years' and started as the Office Coordinator before working her way up through the ranks! Prior to working at Joyce Guiness, she worked at Savills having completed a ski season in Meribel after graduating from the University of the West of England. Jessie makes everyone laugh in the office everyday and the below has given those of you that don't know Jessie the opportunity to know her like we do! When you are not working, how do you like to spend your time? Living in London, there is so much to do and always new places to discover. I do love popping out for a glass of wine or two in the evenings or going to explore new pop ups, restaurants and bars. However, as much as I love discovering new places, I am a home girl and always like an evening in, catching up on a recent series or cooking and hosting for family and friends. Of course, one must counter all of that with some fun in the gym or a sunny weekend outing with friends on my trusty bike along the river to Richmond Park, with a stop en route for a cold beverage of course! If you could live anywhere else in the world,..

    Kikplastic 2019

If you follow our blogs and social media, you will know that we have followed Kiko Matthews over the past year or two and you will know what amazing challenges she has overcome. Among other things, in March 2018, Kiko became the fastest woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean as a solo rower. She did this 3284 mile row in 49 days, 7 hours and 15 minutes, which is a whole week faster than the previous record holder. Kiko is now taking on a different challenge; cycling the coast of the UK and Northern Ireland with the intention of raising awareness of the problem of single use plastic. In recent years, the dramatic effects that plastics are having on the environment and the world’s oceans has been much more publicised and more steps are being taken towards the prevention of the amount of plastic. The amount of plastic straws being used has been cut down drastically, people are carrying reusable coffee cups, metal and glass bottles are becoming more and more popular and cotton buds have been changed from plastic to paper stems. Shops are slowly taking steps towards reducing their plastic consumption as well, with new plastic free aisles being introduced by various companies. This change won’t happen overnight however and so the work that people like Kiko are doing is helping to educate the public and support everyone..

    Importance of Team Building

Our team (Team JG) did something different this week; we went to Shaftsbury Avenue to try out the new Crystal Maze. If you were ever a fan of the show you will know how the game works.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with the 90’s show, you are led through a ‘maze’ or different themed rooms with various challenges in each. Led by an enthusiastic host, you are left to work as a team and must help each other pass each challenge. This was not just your everyday work outing, this was a team building exercise! This was a time for us to combine our expertise and skills to work together and encourage each other to win the game and therefore collect as many crystals as possible. In our day jobs at Joyce Guiness we very much rely on each other as we all have our individual duties to complete, which when put together, complete the main task.  It is important therefore that we are able to work together as a team and coordinate ideas and skills. When doing team building activities these can highlight various characteristics and skills of individuals that you might not have known about before. Not only this, it can also help to build trust between you all. Having trust within a team is crucial as it means that people are comfortable to share ideas..

London is full of famous landmarks and sights and if you are visiting for a weekend, there is enough to see without having to take a step off the beaten track. Imagine a room filled with old arcade games, mini golf, virtual reality and an electric car race track. Can’t think of anywhere with all of that? Four Thieves has it all under one roof. Head down for a fun filled evening with a group of friends! Bobby Fitzpatrick If you fancy an evening surrounded by vintage décor, great pizza, delicious cocktails and some old school music, then take yourself and your dancing shoes along to Bobby Fitzpatrick in Hampstead. #JGStories – Indy Bamber

This week, we spoke to our new Resourcer and Office Coordinator, Indy Bamber. Indy joined the team permanently at the beginning of March having worked at a school for over a year. This week we asked Indy some questions about herself and the decisions that she has made to end up where she is today, working t Joyce Guiness. She tells us why she didn't go to university as well as her decision to stay in London, having spent a lot of time here when she was growing up. We hope you enjoy getting to know Indy as much as we have! If you are a client of candidate and would like the chance to feature as one of our #JGStories, don't hesitate to get in touch! Why did you decide not to go to University? The main reason I decided not to go to university was because I didn’t have one subject that I was set on studying. I am an outgoing and sociable individual and so thought that I would go down a more practical route and put my skills into place. That was when I came to the decision to enrol at Quest Professional. Quest is a secretarial course which provides young individuals with the key skills to get into the workplace. I decided to do the 9 month course which provided me both with business skills..

    Using Recruitment Agencies

Rewind to a year ago and I knew nothing about recruitment agencies and neither did my friends. We were all talking about moving to London and looking for jobs and we thought the way we would do this would be by looking online and networking. We didn’t realise that there were people who would help us find our dream jobs. A couple of months into our year of studying on a secretarial course, some recruitment agencies came in and started talking to us about our options following our graduation. Two of these talks in and I was still none the wiser. Why would people help find us jobs and if they would, how much would it cost us? At the end of one of these talks, someone plucked up the courage to ask how much the service of using recruitment agencies cost, and they told us “nothing”. That couldn’t be right could it? Fast forward a year and I have been working at a recruitment agency for a few months now, and I couldn’t recommend signing up with an agency any more. Thinking back to my naivety and now seeing how the job market works, I wonder how anyone can get a job without the help of an agency. Using an agency to help you find a job couldn’t be any easier. All the hard work is left to your..

    #JGSTORIES – Kate Tiner

This week we spoke to Kate, one of our Consultants, for our third #JGStory. Kate has worked at Joyce Guiness for almost two years and has shared some information about herself below, telling us what advice she would give herself if she could go back in time to when she first moved to London and talking about where she would travel to if she had the chance as well as her favourite TV box set. We hope that you enjoy reading and learning more about Kate and if you are a client or candidate and would like to feature in one of our #JGStories, then do not hesitate to contact us! If you could go back in time to when you first came to London, what advice would you give yourself and why? Always take a job that you enjoy.  It is so important to enjoy the job you are in and the people you work with as we spend more time with our colleagues than we do our loved ones! I know I had no clue what I wanted to do when I left Durham University and I was lucky enough to find a job quickly but I did take the first role that I was offered.  I would suggest to always do lots of research before accepting an interview to get a real feel for the company and..

    Our 2019 Charities

This year at Joyce Guiness we have decided to support two London based charities. With this, we intend to raise awareness for these charities and raise money through hosting an event and setting ourselves a challenge or two throughout the year. We have selected two very different charities and we hope that they will both benefit from our efforts.  The first of these charities is The Graham Hughes International Charity, for patients with Hughes syndrome (also known as “sticky blood”).  This syndrome was only reported for the first time in 1983 and can have serious complications and negative health effects to those who have it.  “Sticky blood” affects all ages, and both sexes.  It is a major cause of thrombosis and a cause of stroke and heart attack if untreated.  It can cause migraine, memory loss, and balance and visual problems.  In women, Hughes syndrome is the most common, treatable cause of recurrent miscarriage. The charity’s aim is: “to educate and empower patients by raising awareness globally about Hughes Syndrome” and to “promote better understanding and management of the condition by medical professionals, thereby improving patient care”.  We hope that through supporting this charity, we will be able to raise awareness to help reduce the number of people affected. The second charity that we have selected is They Mayhew. This is a charity that’s aim is to inform, change and..

    Winter in London

The streets are being covered in falling leaves, the days are getting darker earlier, the nights are drawing in and the weather’s getting colder. This can only mean one thing – winter is coming!  As some of you may be experiencing your first winter in London, we have decided to write about the best things to do on the forthcoming cold and dark evenings and let you know that there is more to do than rush home and get cosy in front of the TV. No matter what part of the city you live in, there is always something wintery to do. Mulled wines and ciders are starting to appear in your local pubs and Christmas lights are being hung across the streets and around trees. People are keenly anticipating the appearance of the first brightly decorated trees and Christmas songs on the radio. Winter isn’t all about Christmas however, but the city embraces this and there is a huge amount of activities and fun things for everyone to do, and it doesn’t all cost money! If you’re looking for something free to do, there are parks to explore and Christmas markets to walk around. You could also spend an evening wandering the streets looking at all of the Christmas light which have spread throughout the city, ending at the Christmas tree in Trafalgar square. If you’re prepared to spend..

    #JGStories – Ingrid Nilsson

This week, in our second #JGStories, we sat down with one of our Partners, Ingrid Nilsson, to find out how she got to where she is today as well as finding out what her favourite boxset is! We hope you enjoy finding out more about Ingrid and if you have any questions or are a candidate or client and would like to feature as one of our #JGStories, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Happy reading! HOW DID YOU GET INTO RECRUITMENT? Back in 2007 I moved to Asia to live and work and I ended up spending almost two years in Malaysia giving me the chance to explore and absorb the sites, culture and of course, the food of Asia. I spent every weekend discovering a new island or food hotspot; I was spoilt for choice, that’s for sure!  I returned to the UK in the Autumn of 2009 as the credit crunch was rearing its ugly head and began the chore of calling and registering with recruitment agencies here in London. The Joyce Guiness office was at that stage based above what is now the cheese shop in South Ken. Pip was there to meet me at the door; she settled me in and produced a spelling and grammar test and told me I’d have to do a typing test (!) something I’d never done before. We chatted..

    Introducing #JGStories

We are very excited to announce our new initiative at Joyce Guiness - #JGStories.  The idea for this came from the fact that recruitment is still, advances in technology notwithstanding, a people business and really knowing what makes people tick is key to what we do.  With that, over the next few months, we are going to lift the lid on the JG team’s lives (given they spend their time delving into their candidates’ lives as they look to match them to the perfect role!).   Alongside that, we are also going to focus on some of our lovely clients (so we can find out more about what they get up to when they are not in the office…), as well as some of the talented candidates we have placed to find out how they are doing and if they have any advice for anyone looking for a role in their industry. So, to start the ball rolling, we decided to sit our MD, Pip Cox, down and discover a few things about her – as well as covering what it is like running a business and being a mum.  We hope you will enjoy #JGStories and please do feel free to send us your comments or questions.  Alongside that, if you are a candidate or client and you are happy to be featured – please do let us know! What did..

    THE PERFECT CV

We know that writing your CV can be very daunting.  Where do you even begin?  We have all been there...and so we have decided to give you the inside scoop so there is no way your CV will go to the bottom of the pile! Here is our Golden Guide! Personal Profile: This is the first thing your future employer will read about you and is the part that makes them want to continue reading! Just write a few lines about yourself but don’t write an essay.  Stick to short and sweet!  If you are finding this tricky, ask your friends or family for three good words that would describe you in order to point you in the right direction. Education: Your education years should be listed in reverse chronological order and should be followed by the qualifications and grades you have achieved. Career History: This is where you highlight the tasks and responsibilities that you have carried out in your last role. Make sure you highlight areas that are relevant to the job you are applying for.. If you have not had much experience, don’t fret, just think about other things you have been involved with such as volunteering, school activities, work experience and internships.  If there was something you particularly enjoyed and/or that you were very good at, do mention this as it will add depth to your experience..

    WHY USE TEMPS?

I started my career working in television running the events at their Head Office. The number of events we used to do used to overwhelm me sometimes. Knowing how much work was involved was incredible and when you are running 3 - 5 events a day, outsourcing some of the work was my only option. Bringing in agency staff was a brilliant way of managing the workload and to ensure efficiency. This used to range from staff helping set up the event, to staff working there, managing the guest list along with meeting and greeting clients. When I became a Personal Assistant, there would be times when you would need to bring in a temp, sometimes at really short notice and this is where having a temp agency is great. You can get a temp within a short amount of time. Whether it’s to cover projects, sickness, holiday’s, peak periods etc. Temporary work is just one of the ways that businesses can offer flexibility and at the same time better meet their own needs. Bringing a temp on board can also be a good way to getting work done whilst you continue your search for the “perfect” candidate. If you are recruiting for a permanent position and need support in the interim,  a temp candidate is perfect, sometimes they end up being your “perfect” candidate. Temp-Perm is always a great..

    Valentines Day in London

Whether you’re all loved up or a superbly happy singleton with a group of friends, Valentine ’s Day has so much on offer. We have helped put together a small guide to show you some of the best “love bites” that London has up for grabs this Valentine ’s Day! Andrew Edmunds This restaurant is considered one of the last bastions of ‘old Soho’ and since 1986, Andrew Edmunds wine bar-come-bistro was doing shabby chic long before it became common currency.  However, even then, it has had everyone hooked on its rustic charms.  A cosy atmospheric restaurant with candlelit tables has a well-deserved reputation for romance! Bob Bob Ricard If you’re going with your other half or with all your girls, Bob Bob Ricard has to be one of the favorite iconic Soho Restaurants for everyone.  The Blue Dining Room is a must to see... the award-winning interior, designed by David Collins, takes its inspiration from the Orient Express.  This restaurant everyone should try once whether it’s for valentines or not. With the glitzy roaring twenties décor, the luxury Anglo-Russian menu and the famous buzzers ‘press for champagne’ at every table will surely win over any prospective suitor! Clos Maggiore It doesn’t get more romantic than this.  This French restaurant is an oasis of calm in the heart of Covent Garden.  Take your pick to sit yourself down in the wood..

    5 Tips to secure…

Trying to second-guess what questions you may be asked, in any interview, is always daunting.  But .... before you get yourself into a flustered panic ...relax...we are going to let you in on the secret of how to answer  questions like a pro! What are your career goals? With this question, your future employer wants to gauge how long you intend to stay within the company or role.  Definitely refer to the position you are being interviewed for and where you hope to see yourself progressing to within this company. This will also show that you have done your research on the company and different possible positions that you may see yourself reaching in time. But remember don run before you can walk! It is important to show that you are interested in progressing in your career and that you are motivated. Why do you want to leave your current company? This, too, is a very important question and is imperative to get right. Rather than talking about what is driving you away from your current company and employment and discussing any negatives you may have with them, you need to focus on what you wish to achieve with a new move and how you hope it will help you gain valuable experience in your career path.  Highlight some aspects of the job you are being interviewed for, that you..

    Benefits of Temporary Work

Benefits of Temp Work    Nicky has recently joined us to build up the temp desk at Joyce Guiness. We thought that in honour of this, we would explore the advantages of doing temporary work. Understandably, lots of people dismiss temp work in order to focus on getting a permanent role but temping can vary in length and sector and can come with many benefits. Here, Nicky gives us her top tips on temping and the benefits surrounding it. “When I first moved to London, I didn’t know many people or know what I wanted to do. Temping gave me the opportunity to make new friends whilst delving into different sectors which ultimately led me to the creative sector and now recruitment. Each person is different but you don’t know what you want until you try. Temping gives you that flexibility without having to worry if it doesn’t work for you. You aren’t tied into contracts, you have the ability to dip in and out and keep trying until you find what is right for you. I have temped in many different industries and have met some of the most amazing people along the way. I have also learnt so much which has really helped me grow as a person. Due to this, it has given me the insiders view point of what it’s like to temp which is why..

    Thoughts on approaching a…

WLTM - Career.  Must be rewarding, stimulating, challenging, flexible... Some thoughts on how to approach a career plan.   I was very fortunate to join Pip Cox, Managing Director of Joyce Guiness at a tremendously inspiring event hosted by Addie Pinkster and Alex Corley-Smith of Adelpha. The guest speaker was Jan Babiak a frankly awe-inspiring individual and very successful businesswoman. Jan’s words and her story gave us so many thoughts and ideas it is hard to whittle these down to one area however, Jan’s comments around the benefits of a life plan resonated very strongly with Pip and I. We are both fortunate in that we meet a wide variety of candidates across different sectors and at various stages of their careers.  Experience has shown us that individuals can struggle as they leave university or full-time education as they are faced with a smorgasbord of potential career options.  It can be difficult for them to isolate a career path, as well as identifying the right job and company for them. With that, we wanted to take some time to look at how individuals might put together a career plan that will hopefully provide clarity and framework, not only at the start of their working lives, but also potentially as they progress and explore other industries and roles.  Each person is, of course, different and so how you approach your plan..

    Consultant Interview: Kate

In May, Kate joined our team as a Senior Consultant. She has been fab and it feels as though she has been here forever! Previously, she had been a PA in the Royal Household and at an Exec search company. We thought we would ask a few questions about her transition from being a PA to a Recruitment Consultant: What did you enjoy about being a PA? I loved the variety of the role and developing a close relationship with both the team and the Principals I worked for. It was fantastic working for the Royal Household and meeting some remarkable people. Why did you make the change into recruitment? I wanted a new challenge and I thought that having spent the last 8 years as a PA, I could relate to candidates and also understand clients’ needs. What is it like working in recruitment? I love it!! There is nothing better than telling a candidate that they have got a job! It is so satisfying matching the right candidates to clients, ensuring both parties are happy. Why did you choose Joyce Guiness? The team! I came to register with JG when I was looking for a new role and I was so impressed by Jessie, my then Consultant, but the whole team were always so professional and friendly. I registered with two other agencies at the time but JG..

    How to ace your…

It is very busy at Joyce Guiness at the moment; we have so many amazing candidates going in to interview, so we thought that a blog on interview tips would be appropriate for both the seasoned interviewers and those which are slightly newer to the process. With anything, a certain amount of preparation needs to take place and interviews are no different. It is important to research the company thoroughly: this includes looking at the interviewer’s LinkedIn, finding out about what exactly it is the company does, what your role will entail and any other relevant information, perhaps a recent news story on it. Doing research will help with settling your nerves as well as giving you useful information which can help you answer any difficult questions in a comprehensive way. It also gives you a chance to show off your knowledge of the company. INTERVIEW DRESS The way that you dress for the interview depends on the company. If they are a finance company it tends to be corporate which means going smart (suit/ dress). However, a creative company maybe more relaxed, for instance chinos/ smart trousers and a suit and jumper! It is good to research what type of company you are going to and how corporate it is. Although, always go respectively dressed and with hair tidy for any interview as first impressions are key. If you..

    First Day at Work-…

We have got back to the grindstone and finally resigned ourselves to the fact that winter might actually be coming and Summer 2017 is not going to last forever…  Instead of being sad about the fact that soon our Pimms is going to be replaced by mulled wine, we are focussing our attention on finding our amazing candidates their next dream jobs.   At this time of year, we are really busy with new roles coming in with the influx of graduates and general candidates who are ready to move on and find a new challenge. Therefore, we thought it would be the perfect time to give some tips on what to do when you get that dream job.   The Office   It may come as a given, but make sure that you have done the journey to your new office before. You will not want to give a bad impression and be late on your first day, so you will need to take into account the traffic and the extra time it will take you. Bear in mind that the chances will be that you are doing it in rush hour. The Eco Warriors out there, who choose to cycle, make sure there is a place to park your bike and a place for you to get changed, as it could create a very awkward situation having to..

    Work Experience- First Hand!

Why do Work Experience? What is the relevance of work experience and how can it help you? Right now I am doing a stint of work experience at Joyce Guiness, where I am being made aware of the skills required in a recruitment agency. While this may not show any relevance to future plans and ideas, it will help provide me a very basic foundation and set of skills for whatever career I end up with. Below, I will outline a few reasons why work experience is so important, and the benefits of doing it. Getting a taste for potential careers and jobs is really beneficial. It can help push you in new and exciting directions as you could decide that the jobs you’ve had your heart set on for ever, really isn’t for you after some experience. As well as this, you may find a new ambition and drive for a different career path which is really exciting. Work experience is a great way to quickly show employers your interests and skills on your CV when searching for jobs. This is vital as the competition for jobs are high and can seem overwhelming, but, by securing experience in a range of careers can really make you stand out from other candidates. Having this on your CV will increase your chances of getting offers at the places you want as..

    Joyce Guiness Visitor

Last week we had a couple of amazing training days with Acet People. It was so worthwhile and we all came away feeling like we had learnt so much. Whilst we were in training, we left our office in the capable hands of Maddie who did such a great job. During her time, she wrote a quick blog about her job hunt and why Joyce Guiness are a league of their own! “I left Quest Professional in June 2014 and was lucky enough to find a job working for a luxury British fashion brand as Front of House & Retail Operations Assistant at their Head Office for nearly 2 years. I then moved on to work as a PA to the CFO & Directors of another British retail brand. Most recently I was working as a PA to the founders of a luxury PR agency but sadly I was made redundant, so now I am on the job hunt again which is always daunting, but knowing there are great agencies around to sign up with and that they are there to help you with your search and guide you to finding the perfect job it is a great comfort and advantage due to them also having great leads into company’s you wouldn’t of known about otherwise. Joyce Guiness really care about their candidates and will help in many more aspects..

    Why Work Experience is…

Last year we posted a blog on the benefits of work experience  . It went down so well, we thought that we would revisit and reiterate the importance and benefits of work experience. Job seeking in itself is a competitive and arduous task, in order to find the dream job one can often apply to several jobs before even getting an interview. This is where work experience is vital. Although sometime you may not be taking part in the most interesting tasks while at a company, it will not last long and enduring this may lead to you being able to take a role further down the line which really engages you.  With more people having various degrees and qualifications, work experience is a thing that can really set you apart from other candidates. There is so much you can learn and experience. When a company is looking to employ someone, they are looking to see if the candidate’s skills will be transferable into their particular office environment. The more examples you have to give and the more experience you have, the more skills you will have to show off in the interview and on your CV.   As well as giving you skills to use both in interviews and on the CV, work experience can give you an insight into whether you actually want to get into that particular..

    VALENTINES DAY

It feels like it was just the other day that I was writing about ‘New Year, New Me’, we are all very proud of ourselves as we have stuck to all our resolutions (Go JG!) Valentines Day falls in February. In this blog, we will be looking at all things extravagant and not so extravagant to make even the most hard-hearted want to celebrate this, sometimes over exaggerated day. VALENTINES DAY MEAL Before I dive into describing my recommendations for restaurants in London, I thought that I would throw out a few facts about our capital city’s restaurant culture. There are 17,000 restaurants in London, from that, 66 have Michelin stars and the average cost of a meal with a bottle of wine for two is £60. It is a known fact that Londoners love to eat out, but did you know that on average the people of London eat out 3 times a week?! Here is my pick for the best supper/meal you could find yourself eating in London on 14th February. If you are looking to push the boat out, Clos Maggiore are offering the supper of dreams. For a mere £155 per person this restaurant, (known by some as ‘the most romantic in London’) is offering a five course meal with a glass of champagne. Another popular option is that of Chi Kitchen on Oxford Street. The..

    New Year, New Start

With every New Year, there comes the carefully mulled over resolutions and the determination that this year will be the year in which they are kept. For us, 2017 is going to be our year to be the fittest, healthiest and happiest we have been. The Oxford Dictionary word of the year 2016 was ‘Hygge’, and I don’t know about you, but I have seen the phrase being thrown around plenty in the last few months. Hygge is the Danish concept of everything warm and cosy.  Therefore making ordinary, everyday things into the extraordinary. If you are anything like me, Christmas was a time to fully embrace Hygge and completely ditch any sort of exercise routine which was in place before the festive season. Now, it is time to tone down the Hygge- well the indulgence part of it anyway and ramp up the fitness. To give you some motivation I thought I would share the new resolutions which our office have made: Lucy has decided to sign up to the Moonwalk. Whilst raising a considerable amount of money for breast cancer, she is also managing to walk a marathon (26.2 miles!) through the streets of London at night. Jessie has started the New Year with a brand new gym membership with David Lloyd and has been attending Spin classes there, along with regular swimming and gym- going! Johanna has..

    London Bucketlist

Moving to London can be quite daunting.  You suddenly find yourself in a big city, overwhelmed with all the tourist attractions you can visit and all the different people you can meet. I moved up to London last November (yes I’ve been a Londoner for a whole year!) and I have been trying to do and see as many things London has to offer – tick as many things off the ‘London Bucket List’ as possible; after all London is home to most of England’s Top 10 attractions. If you live in one of the world’s best cities, you need to make the most of it! Here is a list of a few things that I’ve done so far, things that I recommend every first time Londoner MUST do! Sky Garden I went for dinner at the Darwin Brasserie at the Sky Garden for my birthday and it is one of the best places I’ve visted. Of course you can’t dine out here every night but it is a lovely treat. The view is absolutely amazing and the atmosphere is something else. You can stroll around the ‘garden’ checking out the London skyline whist finishing the night off eating one of the yummiest dinners. If you don’t want to dine out you can simply visit the bar, but the lack of a reservation does involve some serious queuing. @SG_SkyGarden /..

    A Work – Life…

Hillary Clinton once said “Don’t confuse having a career with having a life,” and she couldn’t be more right. It’s becoming increasingly important to have a balance between work and leading a normal life especially as technology intrudes more and more.  Government guidelines state you can’t work more than 48 hours a week on average, but employees are exceeding these timings more frequently. To ease the challenge of turning off at the end of the day we’ve put together some tips to help achieve that desired work-life balance. Unplug Having emails on your phones makes it easier for work to follow you home. Unless you have a job that requires you to have flexibility with your work life, turn your phone off as soon as you get home. Remember that it’s not a necessity to check your emails 24/7. Furthermore, research shows that if you look at your phone last thing at night, your sleep is severely disrupted. The light given off prevents the release of melatonin which is responsible for letting your brain know that its bed time. Step away from the temptation by unplugging completely. Closure is a necessity. Lots of sleep When you’ve had a busy day, the worst thing you can do is have zero sleep. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep so you can re-energize after work. You should not compromise feeling rested..

    Working in the World…

Some people dream of being an interior designer from an early age. One such person was Sophie Conran. The BBC wrote the following article on those who want to pursue their dreams back in 2014: . Pip Cox the MD at Joyce Guiness has worked in recruitment for nearly 20 years and has noticed a rise in people wanting to work in the creative sector, especially the world of Interiors.  At Joyce Guiness we cover a variety of jobs with about 50% of them in the luxury sector: art galleries, luxury retail and interiors.   When asked to recruit for interiors companies, our clients request candidates who have a proven interest or some kind of passion in the interiors world that is demonstrated or shown on their CV. This could be anything from work experience or a course.  With so many people interested in this area it’s becoming increasingly hard to make sure you stand out from the crowd.   In order to break into interior design, firstly you need to be adamant this industry is for you. Having passion and hunger will really spur you into getting that highly needed experience that will demonstrate this.   A proven interest is a step in the right direction and attending trade shows is a great place to start to see if interior design appeals. There are plenty that take place in and around London, e.g...

    Tips to Help with…

Interviews can be scary as it’s the first chance your prospective employee gets of deciding whether or not you’d be a great fit for them, and after all, first impressions count. We’ve put together some helpful tips and pointers to support you along the way: Research the company thoroughly – it’s important to have developed an understanding as it demonstrates your keen and interested in what the company does Be sure you know the time, date and location of the interview and name of the person you are meeting Plan your route (try to arrive 10 minutes before your interview in order to compose yourself and calm the nerves!) Take a copy of your CV for the interviewer/s During the interview, answer the questions briefly, but try to avoid no or yes answers. It’s important not to embellish answers, honesty is key! Remember firm handshake and thank them for their time Body language is key – don’t play with your hair or your hands, try not to create defensive barriers, maintain a natural eye contact, above all try to be natural Dress appropriately – it may vary from smart, formal wear to very formal dress in others. Try and get an insight into what the company would expect from employees or through observation Interviewers also tend to open up the floor at the end of the interview to any questions..

    The Summer of Healthy…

Despite what the weather would suggest, we in the midst of summer. Summer always brings about the need to ditch the sugar and pick up the slightly healthy alternative. Here at JG we’ve hopped on this bandwagon and have become obsessed with all things to do with healthy drinks. It’s an easy way to get your vitamin fix without going OTT. 1) Mello Drinks We love this drink. It is made simply of pressed and de-seeded watermelons. It’s the perfect way to keep cool and refreshed during the ‘hot’ summer.  A drink full of mineral, vitamins and antioxidants that gives you that healthy boost. 2) What a Melon This is a drink which you won’t find on the shop shelves just yet, but it sounds utterly delicious. Ahead of its launch in July we thought we’d do our research on this new and exciting drink.  It is jumping on the watermelon bandwagon and is made of 100% watermelon = 100% natural. Those that have been lucky enough to taste it state it’s better than coconut water. 3) Innocent When you talk about healthy drinks you couldn’t possibly not mention Innocent – smoothies, juices, bubbles the lot. They are jam-packed with 100% fruit and veg but taste unbelievably yummy. They use over 36 different types of fruit and veg, with at least 5 different fruits in every smoothie. There is even..

    A Guide to Getting…

As soon as you graduate from university, the next step for most people is to find a job. London has so many opportunities but unfortunately the job hunt for most is not always straightforward… It can be so disheartening when you send out hundreds of applications to different companies and hear nothing back.  So how do you go about it? Firstly, it would be an idea to apply to some London based agencies. As a first time jobber it is difficult knowing exactly what you want to do and how to go about getting it, and agencies can help with this. Recruitment agencies are there to help when you’re not sure which direction you want to go in – they make the job hunt appear less daunting, so it’s a good idea to register with as many agencies as possible. Recruitment agencies will send you the specs of all the jobs that they think you’d be suited for, but it doesn’t mean you have to take them just because!..

    Wimbledon 2016

Wimbledon 2016 is well and truly underway. It’s the event in the British calendar that makes us all suddenly have a new-found interest in tennis. We all stock up on Pimm’s, strawberries and cream, and anything else that symbolises Britain to enjoy this summer sport. Did you know though that during the whole 2 weeks, The Championship gets through… 54,250 tennis balls 330,000 cups of tea and coffee 150,000 glass of bubbly 320,00 glasses of Pimm’s 140,000 portions of English strawberries and 10,000 portions of cream 25,000 scones () Wimbledon is an event that we all get behind and this year Lucy was lucky enough to get Centre Court tickets: Having applied months ago through the ballot for tickets, I was lucky enough to get 2 Centre Court tickets for the 1st day of Wimbledon, Monday 27th June. Having made our way to Southfields on the District Line we arrived to a packed station with everyone pushing their way to get through the barriers – luckily the sun was shining so this passed with a breeze, if it had been raining this might have gone very differently! We arrived at the gates to the grounds and having had our bags searched we made our way to Henman Hill to soak up the atmosphere and of course drink Champagne (remember to take some with you as its expensive there and you’re..

    Try something quintessentially British…

If you want to do something quintessentially British this week then it has to be Henley Royal Regatta. The best known rowing regatta in the world which was established in 1839. It spreads over 5 days, Wednesday - Sunday and is always over the first weekend in July. (As you weave along the busy pavements past the queues of traffic you will probably hear all the radios tuned in to the Wimbledon Commentary.) Back to Henley; The rowers go head to head in knock out competitions that span a 1 mile course - starting at Temple Island upstream before heading towards Henley Bridge. Getting there from London is quite easy as there is a train station in Henley albeit a little walk to the river - It’s a wonderful British occasion with competitors from all over the world - schools to olympians, men and women, boys and girls – all competing in a variety of classes including: eights, cox less pairs, sculls, coxed pairs. For the spectators there are endless spots you can view the event which spans right along the course. There are numerous enclosures along both banks of the Thames and of course there is plenty of action on the water with parties on boats big and small. The most famous enclosure is the Steward’s Enclosure on the Berkshire side. It comprises of two covered grandstands with restaurants..

    How Work Experience Can…

Some people are apprehensive when you mention Work Experience. You may not be asked to get involved with the most exciting and important projects, and it might not last for a huge amount of time, but gaining some work experience could be the best step to take towards getting that perfect role. Of course you won’t be doing your dream job to start with, but due to so much competition for jobs these days, having work experience on your CV is becoming increasingly important. Work experience is a fantastic opportunity to gain some exposure to office life; how things work, logistics, day-to-day goings on, the different types of roles in an office and generally how the whole office system works. When a company looks to employ someone for an office role, they often want to see a demonstration of office work – and this is where work experience comes into play. They like to see that you have had an insight into office life. You need something on your CV that demonstrates a capability of getting on with the task at hand without any fuss or drama, and this is exactly what work experience does for you. Additionally, as well as providing you with a basic understanding, work experience offers the chance to experience an industry that you may not know much about. You can dip your toe in whatever..

    A DAY IN THE…

Temping always seems scary! People see it as the limbo between a job and no job, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It is a great opportunity to learn some new skills and learn what you like and don’t like about a job. But don’t just take our word for it, check out what one of our fab candidates has to say about her time temping with JG… ******* A very good friend of mine gave me some excellent advice in the lead up to my first day temping.  Just before you get to your office listen to some motivational music!  His particular favourite was “Touch the Sky” by the well-known modern day philosopher Kanye West.  It worked for him, and it worked for me!  Go in with your head held high and a smile on your face.  I guarantee your smile will be returned.  Stage one: complete!  As with any job or new experience it can feel like the first day of school, but you’ve survived that and you can survive this.  Remember you are there because they need your assistance.  You wouldn’t be there if you couldn’t do the job, so enjoy it! The best piece of advice I can offer is don’t be afraid to ask questions.  No question is too silly, and they will appreciate you checking everything through.  One of my most embarrassing..

    JG gets festive

So the 1st of December has come and gone, which can only mean one thing-the festive season has sprung on us again. It is time to get the tree out, plug in those fairy lights, put the Bublé on repeat and re-stock the cupboards with mince pies and mulled wine. But if you are someone who needs a helping hand to get in the Christmas spirit, then the JG team are here to assist 1.       Dust off those decorations Here at JG HQ, our office has been transformed into a Winter Wonderland. We have adorned our walls with Santa and Rudolf bunting, put up our cute little tree and have hung up fun honeycomb balls. As soon as you are surrounded with all the golds, whites and reds, it is hard not to get excited about the month ahead. 2.       Bake some festive treats Nothing will fill you with the Christmas spirit more than the smell of Christmas goodies wafting through your house. Breaking from the tradition of baking minced pies and yule logs, the JG team invite you to try this fun gingerbread wreath. It looks good and will definitely taste good too.   However if you want to indulge this year, why don’t you try baking your own Christmas classic- the After Eight 3.       Participate in Secret Santa Ahead of our Xmas party next week, we have already..

    Our JG Jolly!

Once a year our MD, Pip, takes us away for two days on a little surprise trip. It is a great way to do a little ‘team bonding’ as well as getting to know one another out of an office environment. This year our surprise trip was to HENLEY ON THAMES!
