December has thrown us into the Christmas spirit and trees are appearing in the windows and Christmas jumpers can be seen under jackets and hidden behind scarfs. The manic rush to finish, or start in some cases, your Christmas shopping is setting in and what better place to get ideas for presents than at a Christmas Market. Yes, they’re colder than shops and bring the risk of getting soaked by the random downpours of rain that keep hitting the City, but they are swarmed by cheery people, Christmas music and the smell of mulled wine and delicious food stalls. - Winter Wonderland, Hyde Park
It may not come as a surprise to most of you that Winter Wonderland’s Angel’s Market is number 1 on the list. With the opportunity to shop, ice skate, eat and drink, go on rides and watch various shows, there is much more to do than just shop for stocking fillers. The market itself is huge, with roughly 200 miniature chalets, covered in fairy lights and selling a whole variety of different things. You can easily spend a whole day wondering around the market and eating from various food vendors and drinking endless glasses of mulled wine.
- Christmas by the Bridge at London Bridge City
This is a market you might not have heard of. Located by Tower Bridge, the market offers an escape to those working in the City either at lunch time or as a spot to relax after a long day and grab some last minute presents! This market offers an array of gifts, food and drink and workshops to help get everyone in the Christmas spirit. From food tastings to arts and craft, there is something there for everyone.

Some of you may know of or have visited the market at Greenwich which is run all year round and is great. However, at Christmas time it gets a revamp and serves mulled wine among endless rows of sparkling lights as well as having a ‘Santa’s grotto’. This market is different to the others on the list as it is set within a world heritage site and is not just there for the Christmas shoppers. Open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, they offer the additional Christmas stands yet still run their antique, vintage and collectables on Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays. This market is in an incredible location yet might be more suited to the slightly more ‘hard-core’ market goers.
- Southbank Centre Winter Market
In the winter months, the South Bank transforms into a wintry utopia filled with market stands and food from around the globe as well as hand and body warming drinks. Set alongside the Themes, you can wander along the lines of chalets selling beautiful decorations and stocking fillers and Christmas gifts for all the family. This is another great location to spend an afternoon and gorge on food and cocktails and enjoy being surrounded by people getting into the Christmas spirit and listening to Christmas music.
