5 Tips to secure…

Trying to second-guess what questions you may be asked, in any interview, is always daunting.  But .... before you get yourself into a flustered panic ...relax...we are going to let you in on the secret of how to answer  questions like a pro! What are your career goals? With this question, your future employer wants to gauge how long you intend to stay within the company or role.  Definitely refer to the position you are being interviewed for and where you hope to see yourself progressing to within this company. This will also show that you have done your research on the company and different possible positions that you may see yourself reaching in time. But remember don run before you can walk! It is important to show that you are interested in progressing in your career and that you are motivated. Why do you want to leave your current company? This, too, is a very important question and is imperative to get right. WHY USE TEMPS?

I started my career working in television running the events at their Head Office. The number of events we used to do used to overwhelm me sometimes. Knowing how much work was involved was incredible and when you are running 3 - 5 events a day, outsourcing some of the work was my only option. Bringing in agency staff was a brilliant way of managing the workload and to ensure efficiency. This used to range from staff helping set up the event, to staff working there, managing the guest list along with meeting and greeting clients. When I became a Personal Assistant, there would be times when you would need to bring in a temp, sometimes at really short notice and this is where having a temp agency is great. You can get a temp within a short amount of time. Whether it’s to cover projects, sickness, holiday’s, peak periods etc. Temporary work is just one of the ways that businesses can offer flexibility and at the same time better meet their own needs. Bringing a temp on board can also be a good way to getting work done whilst you continue your search for the “perfect” candidate. Introducing #JGStories

We are very excited to announce our new initiative at Joyce Guiness - #JGStories.  The idea for this came from the fact that recruitment is still, advances in technology notwithstanding, a people business and really knowing what makes people tick is key to what we do.  With that, over the next few months, we are going to lift the lid on the JG team’s lives (given they spend their time delving into their candidates’ lives as they look to match them to the perfect role!).   Alongside that, we are also going to focus on some of our lovely clients (so we can find out more about what they get up to when they are not in the office…), as well as some of the talented candidates we have placed to find out how they are doing and if they have any advice for anyone looking for a role in their industry. Back in 2007 I moved to Asia to live and work and I ended up spending almost two years in Malaysia giving me the chance to explore and absorb the sites, culture and of course, the food of Asia. I spent every weekend discovering a new island or food hotspot; I was spoilt for choice, that’s for sure!  I returned to the UK in the Autumn of 2009 as the credit crunch was rearing its ugly head and began the chore of calling and registering with recruitment agencies here in London. The Joyce Guiness office was at that stage based above what is now the cheese shop in South Ken. Pip was there to meet me at the door; she settled me in and produced a spelling and grammar test and told me I’d have to do a typing test (!) something I’d never done before. We chatted..

100 Years of Remembrance…

Sunday 11th November. The day that we remember all of those who fought for their country and died in the line of duty. 100 years this year since the armistice was signed. For all of those who wear poppies, continue reading to find out why.   On November 7th, 1920, in strictest secrecy, four unidentified British bodies were exhumed from temporary battlefield cemeteries at Ypres, Arras, the Asine and the Somme. None of the soldiers who did the digging were told why. The bodies were taken by field ambulance to GHQ at St-Pol-Sur-Ter Noise. Once there, the bodies were draped with the union flag. Sentries were posted and Brigadier-General Wyatt and a Colonel Gell selected one body at random. The other three were reburied. A French Honour Guard was selected and stood by the coffin overnight of the chosen soldier overnight. On the morning of the 8th November, a specially designed coffin made of oak from the grounds of Hampton Court arrived and the Unknown Warrior was placed inside. On top was placed a crusaders sword and a shield on which was inscribed: "A British Warrior who fell in the GREAT WAR 1914-1918 for King and Country". On the 9th of November, the Unknown Warrior was taken by horse-drawn carriage through Guards of Honour and the sound of tolling bells and bugle calls to the quayside. There, he was saluted..

Winter in London

The streets are being covered in falling leaves, the days are getting darker earlier, the nights are drawing in and the weather’s getting colder. This can only mean one thing – winter is coming!  As some of you may be experiencing your first winter in London, we have decided to write about the best things to do on the forthcoming cold and dark evenings and let you know that there is more to do than rush home and get cosy in front of the TV. No matter what part of the city you live in, there is always something wintery to do. Mulled wines and ciders are starting to appear in your local pubs and Christmas lights are being hung across the streets and around trees. People are keenly anticipating the appearance of the first brightly decorated trees and Christmas songs on the radio. Winter isn’t all about Christmas however, but the city embraces this and there is a huge amount of activities and fun things for everyone to do, and it doesn’t all cost money! If you’re looking for something free to do, there are parks to explore and Christmas markets to walk around. You could also spend an evening wandering the streets looking at all of the Christmas light which have spread throughout the city, ending at the Christmas tree in Trafalgar square. Importance of Team Building

Our team (Team JG) did something different this week; we went to Shaftsbury Avenue to try out the new Crystal Maze. If you were ever a fan of the show you will know how the game works.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with the 90’s show, you are led through a ‘maze’ or different themed rooms with various challenges in each. Led by an enthusiastic host, you are left to work as a team and must help each other pass each challenge. This was not just your everyday work outing, this was a team building exercise! This was a time for us to combine our expertise and skills to work together and encourage each other to win the game and therefore collect as many crystals as possible. In our day jobs at Joyce Guiness we very much rely on each other as we all have our individual duties to complete, which when put together, complete the main task.  It is important therefore that we are able to work together as a team and coordinate ideas and skills. When doing team building activities these can highlight various characteristics and skills of individuals that you might not have known about before. Not only this, it can also help to build trust between you all. Having trust within a team is crucial as it means that people are comfortable to share ideas..

#JGStories - Jessie Mack

This week for our fifth #JGStories, we spoke to one of our Partners, Jessie. Jessie has worked at Joyce Guiness for 8 years' and started as the Office Coordinator before working her way up through the ranks! Prior to working at Joyce Guiness, she worked at Savills having completed a ski season in Meribel after graduating from the University of the West of England. Jessie makes everyone laugh in the office everyday and the below has given those of you that don't know Jessie the opportunity to know her like we do! When you are not working, how do you like to spend your time? Living in London, there is so much to do and always new places to discover. I do love popping out for a glass of wine or two in the evenings or going to explore new pop ups, restaurants and bars. However, as much as I love discovering new places, I am a home girl and always like an evening in, catching up on a recent series or cooking and hosting for family and friends. Of course, one must counter all of that with some fun in the gym or a sunny weekend outing with friends on my trusty bike along the river to Richmond Park, with a stop en route for a cold beverage of course!
