Why do Work Experience? What is the relevance of work experience and how can it help you? Right now I am doing a stint of work experience at Joyce Guiness, where I am being made aware of the skills required in a recruitment agency. While this may not show any relevance to future plans and ideas, it will help provide me a very basic foundation and set of skills for whatever career I end up with. Below, I will outline a few reasons why work experience is so important, and the benefits of doing it. Getting a taste for potential careers and jobs is really beneficial. It can help push you in new and exciting directions as you could decide that the jobs you’ve had your heart set on for ever, really isn’t for you after some experience. As well as this, you may find a new ambition and drive for a different career path which is really exciting. This is vital as the competition for jobs are high and can seem overwhelming, but, by securing experience in a range of careers can really make you stand out from other candidates.  It is very busy at Joyce Guiness at the moment; we have so many amazing candidates going in to interview, so we thought that a blog on interview tips would be appropriate for both the seasoned interviewers and those which are slightly newer to the process. With anything, a certain amount of preparation needs to take place and interviews are no different. It is important to research the company thoroughly: this includes looking at the interviewer’s LinkedIn, finding out about what exactly it is the company does, what your role will entail and any other relevant information, perhaps a recent news story on it. Doing research will help with settling your nerves as well as giving you useful information which can help you answer any difficult questions in a comprehensive way. It also gives you a chance to show off your knowledge of the company. INTERVIEW DRESS The way that you dress for the interview depends on the company. If they are a finance company it tends to be corporate which means going smart (suit/ dress). However, a creative company maybe more relaxed, for instance chinos/ smart trousers and a suit and jumper! It is good to research what type of company you are going to and how corporate it is. Back in 2007 I moved to Asia to live and work and I ended up spending almost two years in Malaysia giving me the chance to explore and absorb the sites, culture and of course, the food of Asia. I spent every weekend discovering a new island or food hotspot; I was spoilt for choice, that’s for sure!  I returned to the UK in the Autumn of 2009 as the credit crunch was rearing its ugly head and began the chore of calling and registering with recruitment agencies here in London. Sunday 11th November. The day that we remember all of those who fought for their country and died in the line of duty. 100 years this year since the armistice was signed. For all of those who wear poppies, continue reading to find out why.   On November 7th, 1920, in strictest secrecy, four unidentified British bodies were exhumed from temporary battlefield cemeteries at Ypres, Arras, the Asine and the Somme. None of the soldiers who did the digging were told why. The bodies were taken by field ambulance to GHQ at St-Pol-Sur-Ter Noise. Once there, the bodies were draped with the union flag. Sentries were posted and Brigadier-General Wyatt and a Colonel Gell selected one body at random. The other three were reburied. A French Honour Guard was selected and stood by the coffin overnight of the chosen soldier overnight. On the morning of the 8th November, a specially designed coffin made of oak from the grounds of Hampton Court arrived and the Unknown Warrior was placed inside. On top was placed a crusaders sword and a shield on which was inscribed: "A British Warrior who fell in the GREAT WAR 1914-1918 for King and Country". On the 9th of November, the Unknown Warrior was taken by horse-drawn carriage through Guards of Honour and the sound of tolling bells and bugle calls to the quayside. There, he was saluted..

The streets are being covered in falling leaves, the days are getting darker earlier, the nights are drawing in and the weather’s getting colder. This can only mean one thing – winter is coming!  As some of you may be experiencing your first winter in London, we have decided to write about the best things to do on the forthcoming cold and dark evenings and let you know that there is more to do than rush home and get cosy in front of the TV. No matter what part of the city you live in, there is always something wintery to do. Mulled wines and ciders are starting to appear in your local pubs and Christmas lights are being hung across the streets and around trees. People are keenly anticipating the appearance of the first brightly decorated trees and Christmas songs on the radio. Winter isn’t all about Christmas however, but the city embraces this and there is a huge amount of activities and fun things for everyone to do, and it doesn’t all cost money! If you’re looking for something free to do, there are parks to explore and Christmas markets to walk around. You could also spend an evening wandering the streets looking at all of the Christmas light which have spread throughout the city, ending at the Christmas tree in Trafalgar square. Our team (Team JG) did something different this week; we went to Shaftsbury Avenue to try out the new Crystal Maze. If you were ever a fan of the show you will know how the game works.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with the 90’s show, you are led through a ‘maze’ or different themed rooms with various challenges in each. Led by an enthusiastic host, you are left to work as a team and must help each other pass each challenge. This was not just your everyday work outing, this was a team building exercise! This was a time for us to combine our expertise and skills to work together and encourage each other to win the game and therefore collect as many crystals as possible. In our day jobs at Joyce Guiness we very much rely on each other as we all have our individual duties to complete, which when put together, complete the main task.  It is important therefore that we are able to work together as a team and coordinate ideas and skills. When doing team building activities these can highlight various characteristics and skills of individuals that you might not have known about before. Not only this, it can also help to build trust between you all. Having trust within a team is crucial as it means that people are comfortable to share ideas..
